Lake in the Woods by Teresa Smith 20×24″ Oil

Teresa Smith, “she paints the soul in nature” as her bio shows. When you look through Teresa’s paintings, you quickly see that she really does paint the soul. Her unabashed use of color is what makes Teresa’s paintings all her own. They have a good feeling to them.

Lake in the Woods is just one example. The trees in the foreground are magnificent as are the trees  in the mid-distance and in the far distance.

Teresa is “an abstract painter from Quebec, living and working on San Juan Island, Washington“. Wow. Two beautiful locations, no wonder she has so many fabulous subjects to paint!

BIO

Teresa Smith’s oil paintings are about ecology with nature as icon. Informed by spiritual practice and a naturalist philosophy, her art combines a richness of oil paint as visceral material with contemplative practice.

Bold colors and lyrical brushstrokes, scratches and drips of oil paint mutate creating a language of vital sensuality. Influenced by Emily Carr, Turner, Georgia O’Keeffe, Cezanne, and The Canadian Group of Seven, she paints the soul in nature.

Aesthetics and deep woods provide seed for the work, revealing color combinations, line, and form. Teresa takes those elements and forms patterns in the negative spaces. It is not always the dominant feature that brings things together, but the warp and the weft that goes on behind the scenes.

Teresa’s oil paintings are about the mystery beneath the surface, the layer woven between worlds. The romance and richness of beauty, earth, salt air, wild roses, cedar and tide.
