Poppy Balser. An artist that braves the harsh Canadian winters to paint what she loves – to the point of adding vodka to her painting water to keep it from freezing. Now THAT is an artist who loves to paint!
I love Poppy’s paintings of the woods, especially with snow and that wonderful glow from the sun. Breathtaking! Be sure to check out all of her paintings, watercolor and oil – just beautiful!

Read a bit about Poppy, from her website:
Poppy Balser has always lived very near the ocean, mostly within walking distance of the Bay of Fundy. With it’s great tides, rich seashore and long-time fishing traditions, the Bay of Fundy is a muse that continually inspires her. She finds that painting en plein air enriches her paintings with a depth found only with direct observation of the subject.
“I want others to see what I see. I live in a part of the world with great natural beauty. Painting outside gives me a chance to share our seacoast and rural landscapes. I can examine and explore these subjects closely, creating paintings that resonate with the viewer. Watercolour is the perfect medium for me to capture the atmosphere and light of my local environment.”
Poppy Balser has been painting in earnest since 2000 and learned her craft through studies with renowned instructors in watercolour and other mediums. These instructors include William Rogers, Chris Gorey, Stapleton Kearns and Jean Pederson. She is a full time professional artist with a part time job as a pharmacist. As well as being an artist and a pharmacist, Poppy Balser is the mother of two children. She has been blogging about being a painter in Nova Scotia since 2008.
