Sherri Thomas, an artist from Wisconsin – paints mainly landscapes with vast skies, which I am always drawn to. What I like about the featured painting are the wonderful reflections in the water and that tree in the foreground. That little bit of light on the trunk just makes it. Very nice!

I grew up in Kansas and Oklahoma but now live in Wisconsin. During the years in Kansas, my family took long trips to visit relatives and my entertainment was looking out the window at the changing landscape and clouds. These scenes fascinated me and it seemed natural to begin drawing them. In high school, my free time was spent in the art room where a wonderful teacher gave me open access. Further studies were at Denver’s “Colorado Institute of Art and Design”. The focus was on a graphic design career but things change and I moved to Wisconsin, married and earned a BS and MBA in marketing. I worked as a marketing manager at some great companies, started a family, and put my art materials in the closet.
It’s tough to keep the desire to create “in the closet” and the siren call became a bull horn. So out came the art supplies and I took a few weekend watercolor classes. It was at a plein air workshop with Dawn Whitelaw that I tried oil paints and they quickly became my favorite medium. I love the buttery feel of the paint, the depth of color, and ability to keep changing the painting as it progresses. I also discovered a love for painting outdoors because nothing compares to the colors and complexity of seeing the subject in real life.
I attribute much of my success to the influence of the prominent artists with whom I have studied. They include Joe Paquet, Scott Christensen, Kathleen Dunphy, Dawn Whitelaw, Marc Hanson, Carol Marine, and Jeff Hargreaves. Their guidance has helped me develop as an artist with a vision to share the beauty of the landscape.
